Italian breakfast, full of strong coffee and delicious pastries. Rome has so many incredible restaurants where you can enjoy some great food. But what are the best places to eat breakfast in Italy's capital city?
Obviously, Rome has some amazing places to eat breakfast. From traditional Italian cafes to trendy coffee shops, there are many options available to choose from.
But don't worry, you will spend all your day walking and exploring this fantastic city, so you will surely burn all the calories to be able to eat more.
Or at least this is how I do it, I could spend the whole day eating delicious Roman food.
What is the typical Rome breakfast?
A typical breakfast in Italy and so in Rome is a coffee and a pastry, or yogurt with muesli, or a slice of bread with butter and jam.
Suppose the breakfast is eaten at a coffee shop or bakery. In that case, the typical Italian breakfast is coffee (a cappuccino or a caffe latte) and a cornetto (like a croissant, but sweeter that comes vuoto= empty, or with vanilla cream, jam, or Nutella) eaten standing at the bar.

Colazione/Breakfast
You will probably have breakfast at your accommodation, but if you decide to book one without it, here is a list of some of the best places, suggested by locals, to have a fantastic Roman breakfast.
Pasticceria Grue'
This is an unmissable breakfast spot, owned by two award-winning guys in the pastry field. Felica Venanzi and Marta Boccanera, prepare delicious typical Italian pastries like croissants, the famous Roman "Maritozzi alla Panna", and delicious homemade cakes.
If you fancy something savoury, there you will find also small pizza, sandwiches and my favourite, the croissants filled with salty Italian delicacies, like parma ham, cheese, bresaola and rucola and much more.
Opening Time: from Tuesday to Sunday from 7.30 am to 9 pm.

Pasticceria Linari
This is a very famous local bakery in the Testaccio neighbourhood. It is the place where friends meet up for a coffee and pastry and for an aperitivo. Open since 1971, it is an unmissable place where to have a delicious breakfast in Rome.
Opening time: from Wednesday to Monday from 6.30 am to 9 pm and Tuesday from 6.30 am to 1.30 pm.

Pasticceria l'Antico Forno Boccione
This is the most famous "pasticceria" (bakery) in the Jewish Ghetto of Rome. They sell many different types of cakes, like fruits and cream tarts, but the most famous sweet they sell is an absolute must-try ricotta cake with cherry or chocolate.
It is not too sweet, very creamy, but not too crumbly. The perfect cake for your breakfast treat.
Get there early in the morning or you will risk finding they sold out already all the best cakes.
Opening Times: Sunday - Thursday 8 am - 7.30 pm. Friday 8 am - 3.30 pm. Closed Saturdays.

Il Cigno Caffe' Paticceria
One of the reasons to have breakfast at "Il Cigno" (apart from the pastries obviously) is the wall behind the counter. It is a real work of art, made by Achille Capizzano and Lorenzo Gigotti. It represents the myth of Zeus and Leda when he turns her into a swan.
In this bakery, you will find most of the famous Roman pastries and delicious coffee.
Opening Time: open every day from 7 am to 9 pm.

Sant' Eustachio Il Caffe'
Do you like coffee? Because if the answer is Yes, I have the perfect breakfast and afternoon break spot for you. This place is famous for its home-roast beans, blended with water from an ancient aqueduct.
It is almost always busy obviously because they serve the best coffee in town. You can choose different kinds of coffee beans and other ways to drink them, so have a look at the menu and are ready to wish to order almost everything.
Opening Times: Sunday - Thursday 7.0 am - 1 am, Friday 7.30 am - 1.30 am, Saturday 7.30 am - 2 am. So basically you can go whenever you need a coffee, they are almost always open.

Roscioli Caffe' Pasticceria
This place is known because they have different shops and one cafe' where you will love filled croissants, maritozzi, and other delicious little cakes with chocolate, creams, or fruits.
One restaurant is "Salumeria" where you can enjoy "salumi Italiani" (Italian cured meats) cheeses and other typical Roman delicacies like pasta and risotto.
Opening Times: Monday - Saturday from 7 am to 9 pm. Sunday from 8 am to 6 pm.

Pasticceria Regoli
Open since 1916, this bakery is an unmissable place where to have breakfast. Located only a short walk from the Colosseum, it could be the perfect place where to have the sweetest meal of your day before starting your exploration of Rome.
In this bakery, you will find all the most famous and loved Roman pastries and a delicious coffee.
Opening Time: from Wednesday to Monday from 6.30 am to 7.30 pm.

Antico Caffe' Ruschena
This delicious "pasticceria" is a heaven for sweet lovers. They have so many choices you won't resist and order only one slice. My favorite is the "aragostine", called this way because it looks like the lobster's tail. They are made with a crunchy filo pastry and filled with vanilla, chocolate, or pistachio cream. A must-try!
Opening Times: Every day from 6.30 am to 9.30 pm.

Forno Monteforte
Looking for a place where to have breakfast, lunch and something sweet in the middle of the afternoon? Forno Monforte, located right in the centre of Rome, is the place you are looking for.
There you will find delicious Italian pastries, croissants, cakes, tiramisu and also some wonderful "pizza al taglio" (pizza by the slice).
Suppose you plan to prepare a sandwich for your lunch. In that case, they also sell fantastic bread you can fill up with whatever you fancy buying at the supermarket, or you can order a slice of white pizza filled with tasty Italian mortadella (a very famous Roman sandwich).
